Unacademy Launches Language Learning App with Initial Focus on Spanish; Indian Languages to Follow
Edtech unicorn Unacademy has launched its language learning app in India, initially offering Spanish to learners. This new venture positions Unacademy to compete with global language learning apps such as Duolingo and Babbel. Co-founder and CEO Gaurav Munjal announced the launch, emphasizing the app’s educational focus over gamification.
“Unacademy Language Learning App is now Live. It’s our first truly Global Product. While all other Apps focus on too much Gamification, we built an App that actually makes you learn a Language,” Munjal wrote in a post on the social media platform X.
The app is now available on both Apple’s AppStore and Google’s Play Store, and it claims to provide an effective method for mastering Spanish. The app’s description highlights its compact and crisp lessons designed for profound understanding. “We’ve distilled the essence of learning Spanish from English into compact, crisp lessons designed for profound understanding. Our interactive templates make learning an adventure, with amazing content ensuring a seamless grasp of language concepts. Start your journey to fluency with us and unlock a world of Spanish with confidence.”
In a separate post, Munjal noted the app has already garnered significant traction with over 10,000 users and 100 paid customers. Responding to a comment on the user demographics, Munjal clarified, “Everyone is from (the) US. We weren’t promoting it in India until yesterday.”
Following the initial free access, users will need to subscribe to the pro version of the app, priced at Rs 4,999 annually or Rs 790 monthly. Addressing feedback on the pricing, Munjal responded, “Help me figure out the right pricing. Will change it right away.”
Unacademy plans to expand its language offerings soon, adding French, German, and various Indian languages. This strategic move comes amid a booming online language learning market, which is expected to grow by $42.10 billion at a CAGR of 19.73% between 2023 and 2028, according to Technavio.
The language learning app introduces another revenue stream for Unacademy, complementing its growing offline business. However, the company has faced challenges in its core business of online test preparation. Unacademy reported a consolidated loss of Rs 1,678.1 crore in FY23, a decrease of 41.1% from the previous fiscal period’s Rs 2,847.9 crore. Despite this, its operating revenue surged 26.1%, reaching Rs 907 crore in FY23 compared to Rs 719.2 crore in FY22.
